Prince William and Kate Middleton opt for charitable donations over wedding gifts

I promised myself I wouldn't write anything about the impending Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Frankly, I don't understand why our U.S. media outlets are devoting a ton of programming to it. That said, I've had to break my vow because I'm truly impressed with what the couple, as they've decided to forgo wedding gifts and are asking their guests (and the public) to instead donate money to their selected charities through their Royal Wedding Charity Fund website.

There are five broad categories to choose from — ranging from children, the arts, support for service personnel, conservation, etc. — and within each category are four to five charities handpicked by the couple. Donors can choose one individual charity to give to, spread their donation to all organizations within a category, or have their gift equally distributed to all charities listed on the website.
