The first month of 2016 is in the books and musically, I couldn't be more thrilled. February and March are looking to me strong release months as well with some huge albums looming on the horizon. Let's get February started off with a bang and a fresh edition of Weekly Tune-Up!
Bloc Party is back, again, minus original members Matt Tong and Gordon Moakes, who left before the making of the UK rock band's fifth studio LP, Hymns, which dropped this past Friday, January 29. Gone are the robust post-punk howls from lead singer Kele, who's channeling his softer, calmer side. Though the production qualities have been tweaked, it still feels like Bloc Party, especially the tune tapped for this week's WTU, "My True Name."
Ever since I heard Rome Fortune collab with Toro Y Moi, I knew I had discovered an artist I'd enjoy. "Love" is the lead single from Fortune's debut record Jerome Raheem Fortune, due out February 26. Brit rockers Mystery Jets released their fifth LP January 15. Curve of the Earth finds a new member in the ranks and features a more expansive sound. In "Bombay Blue," frontman Blane Harrison's vocals are laid atop keyboards and guitar riffs. Italian-based Brothers In Law have an excellent new record called Raise, that meshes garage rock and dream-shoegaze pop. Those circular guitar swells just reel me in.
