I know we're knee deep in a major election, but you'll have to forgive my digressions into baseball.
Tonight, the San Francisco Giants — a team I have followed through lots of ups and down since the early 1970s — host Game One of the 2012 World Series from AT&T Park in S.F. against the heavily favored Detroit Tigers and their MVP from last season, Justin Verlander, and the probable MVP this season, Miguel Cabrera.
Do the Giants have a chance? Of course. But the probabilities of them coming back from another big deficit like they've done against Cincinnati and St. Louis can't possibly happen this week, can it?
Speaking of baseball, how 'bout those Miami Marlins, who announced yesterday they had fired their first-year manager, Ozzie Guillen. The Marlins spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the past year on a spanking new ballpark, new uniforms, a new name, and yeah, a new manager. They were so exciting. Showtime even featured them on its new documentary series. But after Ozzie had the temerity to praise Fidel Castro in April, it all went downhill for him. Of course, if they had won, it might have been forgiven. But they didn't.
Last night in Tampa, GOP Senate candidate Connie Mack made a campaign appearance, where he repeated his assertion that he'd like the United Nations to go away, and that he'd like Bill Nelson to debate him again — if he has the guts to do so!
CL was on a very interesting conference call yesterday with Obama For America campaign manager Jim Messina, who spoke with supreme confidence about the candidate's chances. Who knows how much was bloviation and how much was the truth, but it was interesting.
During the municipal elections in Tampa in early 2011, both City Council and mayoral candidates talked about making quality of life improvements in the city, such as adding more street lights. Yesterday, Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced he will spend more than $2 million throughout the next five years to install 8,400 street lights.
