CD review/Show preview: Blind Man's Colour presents Wooden Blankets at a release show with Sons of Hippies this Friday

was the hottest indie act to rise from the local music scene in 2009. In a matter of few months, the experimental psyche pop outfit fronted by young musicians Kyle Wyss and Orhan Chettri was recognized by Kanye West, featured on tastemaker blogs like Stereogum and Gorilla vs. Bear, and signed by Brooklyn indie label Kanine Records (Surfer Blood, Grizzly Bear), which re-released their debut, Season Dreaming, in August. A mere six months later, BMC returns with the Wooden Blankets EP.

The six tracks on Blankets were created around the same time as those on Dreaming. The difference is that Blankets was recorded entirely on a 4-track, its synths and beats taken from ’90s-era beginner keyboards. The result is that the band’s blend of folk, ‘60s pop, psych drone and abstract lo-fi electronica take on a hazier ambiance and their surreal experimentations bring them closer to sounding like the band they are compared to most often — Animal Collective.
