Before there were televisions and reality TV programs, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote an opera and titled it Cosi fan Tutte (The School for Lovers).
This week, students from the USF Opera Department are presenting their own modern take on the opera, in English and set in Naples, Fla.
"It would be a great first opera experience," said Doug Denning, Assistant Stage Director. "It's in English and it has scenarios that are easy to comprehend and are entertaining."
The play starts off with a bet made between three characters. Don Alfonso implies that all women are loose in their morals, even the girlfriends of the male leads, Guglielmo and Ferrando. To prove him wrong, the men tell their girlfriends they are joining the Coast Guard and say goodbye. Instead of cruising the open seas, however, the two return to Naples with a dreadlocked, Rastafarian disguise (the original play had fake mustaches). Will the ladies be able to resist their free-spirited charm?
