Tonight in live music: Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers, Eric Lindell, Bob Marley Birthday Tribute & more

Concerts this Fri., Feb. 6

Hey, it's Friday, woo hoo! A nice offering of live music all over town this Feb. 6; check out what's happening below...

Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers with The Sh-Booms Booming-voiced keysman Josh Hoyer hails from Nebraska and has played with the Shadowboxers since 2012, encompassing players on guitar, bass and drums along with a two-piece trombone and sax section, and grooving on a mix of hard-hitting Motown/Stax-inspired soul, funk and R&B. Their self-titled debut was issued last January and remained near the top of the Roots Music Report’s Soul Albums charts until last week, when it climbed to No. 1; not bad for a self-release. The sextet dropped a sophomore follow-up on Silver Street Records, Living By The Minute, last month. (Local 662, St. Petersburg)

Eric Lindell & Co. feat. Anson Funderburgh New Orleans-by-way-of-Cali singer-songwriter Eric Lindell wields a mean guitar and blows a versatile harmonica, while his smoky-mellow vocal tone is perfectly suited to the blend of blue-eyed soul, swamp pop, blues-licked roots rock and breezy grooving R&B he produces with his band. This tour ‘round, they’re is joined by Texas-bred underground blues guitar vet Anson Funderburgh. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)

The Time Jumpers feat. Vince Gill, Kenny Sears & Ranger Doug Nashville session musicians formed Western swing group The Time Jumpers to blow off steam, originally. Now, the ensemble has a few full-lengths, a spot on the Rounder Records artist roster, and enough respect in the industry as well as musician friends that they can occasionally bring special guests on the road. This tour finds core members Sears (fiddle) and Ranger Doug (vocals, guitar) joined by country biggie Vince Gill. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)

Kelley McRae & Roy Schneider A double bill showcasing the folk-soaked talents of roving songstress Kelley McRae (born and raised in Mississippi, based in NYC until 2011, and currently living on the road with husband/collaborator Matt Castelein), and multi-instrumentalist troubadour Roy Schneider, who maintains roots in South Florida. (Hideaway Café & Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)

Yarn, Gravel Kings, Paleface A three-pack attack of righteous modern roots sounds. Brooklyn’s Yarn pits three-part harmonies against alt country and Americana built on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, bass and drums. NYC Lower East Side anti-folk troubadour Paleface is a frequent Avett Brothers collaborator with a resonant vocal and rambling acoustic guitar-and-harmonica-driven sound complemented by the dulcet backing harmonies and steady beat-keeping of partner/bandmate Mo Samalot. And South Florida’s Gravel Kings round out the evening with upbeat newgrass-pop tunes and a new record, Arrows & Maps, that dropped last fall. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

Taimur Agha with Brian Busto, Jon Tranqui, Carlos Travieso The latest installment of Serious Soul finds deep house DJ Taimur Agha behind the decks; Agha is co-founder and co-creative director of NYC’s underground dance mainstay, Blk|Market Membership, and has been its resident DJ since its launch in ’06. (Hyde Park Café, Tampa)

Party Favor with DVNK SINATRV Given the seal of approval by the likes of Diplo and Mix Master Mike, Party Favor (the pseudonym of Los Angeles EDM producer Dylan Ragland) pushes a particularly bizarre sample-spliced-and-skewed, bass-bumpin’ brand of trap music he’s labeled ‘twerk,’ calling on old classic hip hop and a confetti palette of electro sonics. Orlando’s DVNK SINATRV (that’s ‘Dank Sinatra,’ yo) works in a more straightforward, marching and skipping trap realm. (Amphitheatre, Ybor City)

Bob Marley Birthday Tribute Tampa Bay roots reggae mainstay Tribal Style heads up this free tribute to an icon of the genre they practice so capably, who was born on February 6 and left behind a rather significant legacy. Expect plenty of Marley tunes (“Soul Shakedown Party”? “Three Little Birds”?) done in the quartet’s funky, ire-grooving style. (Three Birds Tavern, St. Petersburg)
