The Laugh Tract — who's bringing the funny

  • Nikki Carr is at Side Splitters Sunday night.

'Tis the season for comedy, but not quite as much as we normally get. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are fun times to spend with family, but not at a comedy club. No shows those nights.

But there are still plenty of stand-up options the rest of the week. Here are your best bets:

Jimmy Shubert
at Tampa Improv. Shubert has a confident stage demeanor, telling stories like he's complaining about his day to a buddy. It's often the extra emphasis he gives to his premises that makes them even funnier. Showtimes are Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. $14-$18. 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. Info: ImprovTampa.com or 813-864-4000.

Dak Rakow at Side Splitters. Rakow has decades of experience, a self-deprecating style and good timing. He has no problem taking a simple scenario from everyday life and turning it into a bizarre conversation or occurrence. Showtimes are Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. $10-$16.50. 12938 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa. Info: SideSplittersComedy.com or 813-960-1197.

Nikki Carr at Side Splitters. Side Splitters seems to be the place to see all your recent "Last Comic Standing" favorites. Another finalist from this year's show hits the stage this weekend, and Carr's unapologetic comedy should prove just as popular live on stage as it did on the show. One night only. Showtime is Sunday at 7 p.m. $10. 12938 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Info: SideSplittersComedy.com or 813-960-1197.

Rich Guzzi at Snappers Grill & Comedy Club. With comedy hypnosis, the audience is a big part of the show. Volunteers will be given crazy suggestions and everyone else will enjoy what follows. The early shows are pretty clean, but the late shows are more adult-oriented. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. $15-$20. 36657 U.S. 19 N., Palm Harbor. Info: SnappersGrill.com or 727-938-2027.

Larry Lee Lewis at 2 Palms Bar & Bistro. Like Jerry Lee, Larry Lee has a musical background. But unlike The Killer, the comedian uses his talents and jokes to make you laugh. Showtime is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. $10. 2950 Gulf To Bay Blvd., Clearwater. Info: TampaBayComedy.com or 727-741-8014.
