The Sh-Booms were not winners of NPR Music's third annual Tiny Desk contest, but the Orlando soul garage outfit did not go unnoticed.
Over the weekend, the tastemaking public radio station aired a four-minute segment featuring a fantastic get-to-know-you interview with Sh-Booms frontwoman Brenda Radney, who reinvigorated an already buzzworthy lineup when she joined the band sometime in 2015.
NPR focused on Radney's past in the Justin Timberlake camp, but they also did a beautiful job capturing how much the singer and her bandmates just truly enjoy making music and playing shows.
"I think when I had the deal, [music] became not fun, and that bothered me. Now, I do this for fun, even though I am broke," Radney said at one point in the segment. "I do sort of wish that I could make this a full-time thing. I know that there are opportunities out there for this to happen, but I need it to be my opportunity, and I need it to fit my needs."
Radney and bassist Al Ruiz couldn't reiterate how stoked they were in a message to CL as they made their way to South Florida for a few shows.
"Out of 6000 entries, it's pretty bad ass that we caught their eyes and ears," they said, adding that they are currently in the studio working on a debut full length. "There are some things in the works we can't really discuss, but [we're] taking it a day at a time. When the record is complete it'll be easier to navigate what happens next."
