Pop goes the Tampa Museum of Art this summer! Andy Warhol’s bizarrely brilliant, campy and thought-provoking art films will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition of his works, In Living Color.
The Andy Warhol Film Series kicks off July 16 with the 1965 feature My Hustler, a comedic benchmark for gay cinema that follows an aging homosexual who rents a butch blond hustler and brings his Fire Island menagerie home for the weekend. Things get dicey when another man vies for the boy toy. Smiths fans might recognize the shot of hunk Joe Dallesandro’s torso, used for the cover of the band’s 1984 self-titled album. Also showing will be Kiss, the silent, experimental film with Factory regulars kissing in extreme close-ups.
Screenings will be in the Dickey Family Lecture Hall. Cash bar and snacks available. Thursdays through Sept. 20 at 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza, downtown Tampa; screenings start at 6:45 p.m.; museum open until 7 p.m. $5, tampamuseum.org.
