Tony DeSisto, a Tampa attorney who grew up in Rhode Island and is now running for the Tampa City Council in District 4, unveiled a specific agenda that he wants to base his campaign upon today.
The South Tampa District 4 seat is currently held by Yolie Capin, selected by the Council last summer to fill in the remaining months left in the term of John Dingfelder. Capin has yet to announce whether she'll run again for the seat, but in that vacuum Julie Jenkins, Joe Citro and DeSisto have announced their candidacies.
In DeSisto's document, which lists 10 items on it, he says the city should privatize more of its operations. "I think it's something that we have to look at," he says, specifically mentioning warehousing functions and janitorial services as to logical departments to look at. But he's not naive, acknowledging that privatization, a word sprinkled around by conservatives to improve government services, can turn out not to save money or increase production as sometimes advertised. He also says the city needs to consolidate services with Hillsborough County. Some services have been consolidated over the years, but a lot haven't, as the fissures between the two local governments have at times proven to be problematic.
