The Revivalists with Bobby Lee Rodgers Hot on the heels of releasing a brand new studio outing, Men Amongst Mountains, comes New Orleans roots music septet The Revivalists, which have been earning no small amount of buzz from the likes of Paste Magazine, PopMatters and Relix for the LP. Recorded over two weeks onto tape to capture their warm live vitality, Mountains is a mix of soulful sax-fused grooves and spirited swamp-coated folk rock. “Thematically, we focused on the gentle giving way to the heavy, the acoustic to the orchestral,” vocalist David Shaw has commented. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Band & the Beat with The Good Graces Raleigh, N.C. singer-songwriter Tracy Shedd diverges from her usual acoustic guitar-driven slowcore sounds and sets her dulcet intones against dreamy, down-tempo synthesizer grooves in Band & The Beat, her new project with musician husband James Tritten. They hit town for an in-store with Atlanta’s female-fronted indie folk-pop outfit The Good Graces, which features former local John McNicholas (Spiller) on guitar. Microgroove presents the performances in collaboration with Fort Lowell Records, and offers free beer, a free 7-inch single to all attendees while supplies last and free admission, too – but donations to the artists (and some pocket change for vinyl) are encouraged. Post-Rays Concert Series: Kacey Musgraves If you need even more proof that Kacey Musgraves does whatever she wants, look no further than the 26-year-old’s performance on The Tonight Show back in June. Flanked by a four-piece, Musgraves — dolled up like Loretta Lynn at a summer fair in the finest of illuminated western formal wear, and with feet bare — performed “Biscuits” from her new album, Pageant Material. The lyrics in the catchy single include a line about “pissing in my yard” (her label asked her to change it to “spitting” — she refused), and while the song wears a few of the typical twangy sonic tenants that country radio spits out these days, holding it up against everything else on the airwaves reveals a unique persona and ethos the genre is starving for. She covered Coldplay’s “Yellow” during a recent BBC Radio appearance, for chrissakes. All of it has earned Musgraves two Grammys, and she brings her talents to St. Pete for a postgame show following the Rays’ bout against the Baltimore Orioles. Ska Revival Tour with The A-OKs, Be Like Max, Victims of Circumstance, Sketchie Now in its second year, Ska Revival Tour pairs a few national acts of the genre with locals from each city the tour lands. The A-OKs from Denver yield a frenetically-paced brand of ska-punk they’ve dubbed “partycore,” the seven-piece blasting brass and propelling through tracks like “Misfortune Cookie,” “When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Bombs!” and “Beer Bong,” the latter off third and latest full-length, Maybe Partying Will Help. Las Vegas’ Be Like Max do aggro-ska with fewer horns, and lean more to rah-rah choruses ala “Cheap Shot Youth Anthem” and “Wang Out.” Sarasota’s Sketchie and Clearwater-brewed Victims of Circumstance round out the night’s lineup. Slipknot with Lamb Of God, Bullet For My Valentine, Motionless In White Slipknot – the supremely freaky metal band from Iowa known for grotesque made-for-a-horror-flick masks, aggro live antics and involved stage set-ups – hits town on its latest “Summer’s Last Stand Tour,” and are backed up by a solid bill of heavy talent, including Richmond groove-thrash faves, Lamb of God, which just dropped a new album, VII: Sturm Und Drang. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)
Babyface Not only does he have 11 Grammys to his credit (the last for his duet collab with Toni Braxton, Love, Marriage & Divorce), but sexy R&B jam icon Kim “Babyface” Edmonds is responsible for an impressive number of No. 1 R&B charters, both as the featured artist and the writer-producer behind them – and he’s worked with virtually everyone, from Eric Clapton to TLC to Ariana Grande to Lil Wayne. The Bricks & SPoT Ybor 5 Year Anniversary Party with Look Mexico, Wolf-Face, The Sh-Booms, The Tim Version, The Welzeins, Sons of Beaches, DJs Blenda, CUB, Queys The Bricks celebrates its five-year milestone with an anniversary blow-out that finds 14th street closed at Seventh Avenue to accommodate the festivities, which include performances by six solid Florida-area acts (from Tallahassee’s math-y indie rockers Look Mexico to Orlando-brewed garage soul outfit The Sh-Booms to our own Teen Wolf punk rock growlers Wolf-Face), an art show featuring works by nearly a dozen Bay area talents, and free giveaways and prizes courtesy of Vans. Gates open at 3 p.m., and the $10 suggested donation for admission goes to nonprofit youth-driven organization, Boards For Bros. (The Bricks Ybor, Ybor City)
