SATURDAY, JULY 26
Fall Out Boy and Paramore with New Politics Try to convince me you haven’t howled along with Fall Out Boy’s “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” and I will call you a goddamn liar. (“I’M ON FIIIIIIIIIRRRREE!!!”). Okay, maybe you don’t listen to terrestrial radio as often as I do, but that song was everywhere for a while and it’s earwormy as hell, even if you aren’t generally a fan of Fall Out Boy; I know I’m not. Plus, it’s impressive that the alt rock-tronic outfit went on hiatus for three years and came back with a triple-platinum single, not to mention a fifth full-length, 2013’s Save Rock and Roll, that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Sharing co-headlining duties with Fall Out Boy on this “Monumentour” is Paramore, the punk-pop group led by sweet-yet-sharp-voiced singer Hayley Williams, which is currently on tour behind an eponymous fourth LP, their first without founding members Josh and Zac Farro. ‘Course, it’s Williams that the fans really care about and album sales cement this fact; Paramore topped the charts in eight countries and generated two platinum-certified singles: “Still Into You” and “Ain’t It Fun.” 7 p.m., MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa.
New Groove City with Mark Barrios Band Conga and percussion master Gumbi Ortiz (who you may know from his role in guitarist Al DiMeola’s band) leads New Groove City, his former Latino Projekt taken into more soulful realms of timba and Cuban salsa music. Currently, he’s joined by Kenny Walker (bass), Carlos Marchena (keys), Lemay Olano-James (violin), Butch Thomas (saxes), Luis Antonio Alicea (drums), Eduardo Videaud (vocals) and Laura Alfonso (flute). 8 p.m., Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa.
He Is Legend with Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Wilson, Devil Gone Public He Is Legend calls on elements of metalcore, stoner rock and psychedelia in their sinister, simmering and roiling alternative sounds. “Once bitten, twice chewed/You’re mine now, yeah you,” Schuylar Croom rages in “Something Witchy,” a cut off forthcoming He Is Legend album Heavy Fruit. The much-anticipated fourth outing from the N.C. band — due out on Tragic Hero Records on Aug. 19 — is the quintet’s first release since 2009’s It Hates You and following a few-year hiatus from 2009 to 2011. 5 p.m. doors, Orpheum, Ybor City (all ages).
Johnnyswim Husband-and-wife songwriting duo Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano are Johnnyswim. Amanda is the daughter of disco/R&B legend Donna Summer; you can hear it in her silky rich vocals, which soar over a melody-rich mix of soul, folk and blues lightly seasoned with worldly flavor, and harmonize enchantingly with Ramirez’s own high-toned sweet ‘n’ velvety croons. The duo have released several EPs since forming in 2008, but only issued a full-length debut, Diamonds, in April. 7:30 p.m., Jaeb Theater at Straz Center for Performing Arts, Tampa.
Sidereal with Offshore Riot, Currentz Jacksonville reggae pop-rockers Sidereal were among the winners of the world’s largest crowd-funding event, One Spark, back in April. The idea that earned the foursome $10k is an international music relief project; they plan to use the cash to provide music lessons and distribute musical equipment and arts and crafts supplies to villages across Central America during their world tour behind Third Time’s the Charm EP, which peaked at No. 1 spot on the iTunes Reggae Albums charts. 8 p.m., The Local 662, St. Petersburg.
HANK 3 with Attention Deficit Domination, 3 Bar Ranch Outlaw country artist Hank 3 (grandson of Hank Williams, son of Hank Williams, Jr.), has inherited his family’s musical genes — he plays banjo, bass and drums in addition to thrashing it out on guitar — and while he can sing a twangy nasally melody like nobody’s business or lead a bouncing, hoe-downing good time, he prefers the cowpunk way of life, raising hell, kicking ass and guzzling whiskey all along the way. He’s released three albums in the past year: the traditional country-styled Brothers of the 4×4, horror-punk inspired A Fiendish Threat, and most recent outing Ramblin’ Man, which includes outtakes, unreleased material, and cover songs that include ZZ Top’s “Fearless Boogie.” 8 p.m. doors, State Theatre, St. Petersburg.
SUNDAY, JULY 27
Classic Albums Live: Chronicles The Classic Albums Live presentations take an enduring LP and recreate it note-for-note with a full symphony orchestra and without any gimmicks. For this latest go-round, country rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival gets the tribute treatment via their album Chronicles, a greatest hits comp released in 1976 and featuring a boatload of well-worn tunes, among them, “Susie Q,” “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Down on the Corner,” “Fortunate Son,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” 7:30 p.m., Capitol Theatre, Clearwater.
Ol' Dirty Sundays with DJ Cosmo Baker This Sunday's edition of the weekly dance hip hop & more dance party hosted by DJs Casper and LeSage features illustrious NYC decks extraordinaire Cosmo Baker, who propelled the mash-up craze as one-third of The Rub collective with DJs Ayres and Eleven. He now rolls solo and makes smooth transitions between classic and modern hip hop joints, funk, soul, disco, and the odd rock and pop tunes, too. 10 p.m., Crowbar, Ybor City.
Tampa Bay Rays Summer Concert Series: Imagination Movers The kids-friendly New Orleans band that started on PBS and got picked up by Disney Junior hits the Trop for a post-Rays game performance that has a Christmas in July theme. Expect lots of young ‘uns at this one. Post-Rays Game, Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg.
