Yet another super-nifty unique gallery has opened in St. Petersburg. From Mayan Hands, a gallery/shop displaying folk art acquired by New World Imports Inc. — owned by prominent local arts patrons Robert and Chitranee Drapkin — imports one-of-a-kind Mayan folk art, textiles, and handicrafts from living Mayan Indian artists from the highlands of western Guatemala. Their handmade art includes sculpture, santos, dance masks, textiles, ceramics and ceremonial objects.
“Due to the limited nature of the Mayan art and the fact that artisans are waning in numbers, their offerings are truly collectibles," Drapkin says on the store's website, which has a user-friendly shopping tool if you can't make it to visit in person. "We have a lot to offer and are looking forward to participating in our local art community,” Drapkin adds.
Executive Director of the Arts Alliance of St. Petersburg, John Collins welcomed From Mayan Hands with a press release announcement, touting the gallery's contribution to the international diversity of our arts offerings in St. Petersburg.
