PLAN AHEAD: Road closures and parking restrictions in St. Petersburg …

Don’t say you haven’t been warned. The U.S. Secret Service, the city governments of Tampa and St. Pete, the host committee of the Republican National Convention and every media outlet in Tampa Bay have been spreading the word that there’s going to be some gridlock goin’ on during the RNC.

Or rather there will be, if people don’t pay attention and plan ahead.

St. Petersburg only has to suffer road closures from Saturday night Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. through Monday, Aug. 27 at 6 a.m. That will provide enough time to clear out the Rays game crowd, set up the Trop, throw a big party (Sunday night’s Welcome Party for delegates and media) and get everything back to normal the next day.

Tampanians, on the other hand, will have to alter their daily transit habits for a full week, as road closures and other restrictions extend from Fri., Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. through Fri., Aug. 31 at 6 a.m.

The Secret Service maps below provide a good overview. But expect the unexpected: In addition to the restrictions detailed in the maps, temporary road closures and traffic delays could occur at any time.

To keep up to date, check the two cities’ special RNC websites: tampagov.net/RNC and stpete.org/RNC.
