For someone who is commonly referred to as one of the hardest working musicians in the business, on Thursday night, Warren Haynes was late to work. Scheduled for a start time of 8:30 p.m., Haynes and company, otherwise known as Govt Mule, didnt hit the stage until nearly 9:20 p.m. This didnt surprise my friend Steve much: Mules are hard to get moving, I know, my Grandpa had a farm.
Much to the delight of the crowd, the band quickly made up for their tardiness. Stepping into the light through a familiar smelling haze, Haynes strapped on a blond Gibson Firebird and launched headlong into Bad Dog Boogie, sending the previously restless audience into frenzy. The excitement continued as the band slid right into Lola Leave Your Light On and then to Mother Earth with no break between songs. This trend continued throughout the night with Haynes showing no signs of fatigue.
In all, the band performed two extended sets and an encore, making it a very late night. For anyone who'd been to a Govt Mule show before, this came as no surprise. For us first-timers, it was a bit difficult getting out of bed for work the following morning, but well worth it.
