Tips to help conserve energy and resources for a greener holiday

The holiday season is a time of the year when the most energy and resources are used, but also gives us many opportunities to conserve them. Here are some tips that can really make your winter holidays “green”:

  • If your family celebrates Christmas and gets a real Christmas tree, you can recycle them when the holiday is over. See this website for more information.
  • Recycle all of your holiday decorations! Don’t buy new garland, lights, ornaments and other decorations. Put them in boxes in the attic or basement to use the next year. This will not only help with the energy used to make all these products, but it will help your wallet as well!
  • When it comes to decorating the exterior of your house with festive lights, I am sure you are aware that it becomes pricey when paying your electricity bill. A few tips when it comes to these lights are to not leave your lights on all day and to use solar or LED lights. If you leave your lights off during the day and turn them off before you go to sleep then it saves you money and it helps the environment (this may seem like common sense, but I have seen Christmas lights left on all day). Using solar and LED lights help the environment and your holiday costs by reducing energy use.
