Ab-Soul Ab-Soul is one of those California indie hip hop artists who’s associated with a bunch of other genre artists I dig – a member of Black Hippy with Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q, frequent collaborator with Mac Miller (he recorded 2014 third LP These Days... in Miller’s home studio), and has slung guest verses on tracks by Chuck Inglish, Murs, Common, Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino, Talib Kweli and a host of others. His subject matter ranges from heady odes waxing on aliens, DMT and opening the pineal gland to more traditional bangers like the first single off These Days..., "Hunnid Stax," which finds Ab-Soul throwing out all kinds of quality slang about making money with help from Miller and Schoolboy Q, and samples Lana Del Rey’s “National Anthem” amid the big bumping beats. BBQ Wednesday Acoustic Series: Carter Hulsey with Ryan Reid Taking the standing room stage for the latest edition of New World’s tunes n’ food series are a few out-of-towners. Missouri-bred alt-country and folk singer-songwriter Carter Hulsey headlines behind a new album, Drive Out; thoughtfully crafted first single “NPR” is a melody-drenched number built on plucked mandolin and banjo along with strummed acoustic guitar. Oklahoma songsmith Ryan Reid warms things up with his higher-toned soulfully rust-coated pipings. 7-9 p.m., New World Brewery, Ybor City, free admission.
