There were very few competitive races in Hillsborough County in last month's primary on either side of the political aisle, but that's not the case for the November ballot.
There are two county commissioners facing challenges - District 4 Republican Al Higginbotham and District 6 countywide commissioner Kevin Beckner.
In today's Tampa Tribune, the generally conservative editorial page comes out endorsing both incumbents.
Higginbotham is facing a challenge from Democrat Mark Nash, who the Trib credits with being "passioned and informed," but otherwise ignores him to concentrate on why they think he should be re-elected. The paper does lament that the incumbent "were a little more farsighted on transportation and growth management issues," but credit him with having an open mind.
The Trib does afford more inches to Beckner's GOP challenger, Margaret Iuculano, but it ain't positive. The editorial page rips Iuculano for her infamous missive from a year ago that blames him for the liberal politics of San Francisco, leading the page to conclude that "such hyperpartisan attacks only cast doubt on Iuculano's judgement."
We always figured this race would start getting nasty, and it's definitely on now.
