Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over The Sea is among the most lovely, transcendent indie rock records of all time, both for its lo-fi yet lushly composed instrumentals that are pop-catchy, folk-poignant and psychedelic all at once, and Jeff Magnum’s mix of abstract and direct lyric writing. The 1998 second and final LP from Neutral Milk Hotel has certainly been lauded to the moon and back by every music rag of any significance, and the adored band spawned by the Athens’ Elephant 6 collective has opened the door for loads of other indie acts that followed a similarly genre-loose and lavish sonic trajectory. “Dear friends we love you but it’s time to say goodbye,” Neutral Milk Hotel wrote in a message last fall after a run of reunion dates that started in 2013. Mangum and Aeroplane-era co-horts Scott Spillane, Julian Koster and Jeremy Barnes land in Clearwater for a show that is part of their ostensible farewell tour. Tickets to the Clearwater date were still available at the time of this writing (call the venue to confirm availability), but Florida fans who want more than one fix can follow them to Orlando, Miami, and Ponte Vedra after Clearwater. Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies 2015 Deadheads were abuzz when the four original surviving members of the Grateful Dead — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir — announced they’d be reuniting to play together for the last time with some very special guests during a giant July Fourth weekend blow-out at Chicago’s Soldier Field, now preceded by a few June dates in Santa Clara, Calif. A live broadcast of both runs will be aired during a multi-day Pay-Per-View special that’s expected to be the largest syndication of a live music event in history. But ... the summer is rather far away. Deadhead appetites are whetted while they await the concerts (or the broadcasts of them) when Fathom Events presents its fifth annual nationwide Grateful Dead Meetup at the Movies. Two Bay area theaters take part in this year’s edition of the heady screening event, which features a concert previously unreleased on film: July 19, 1989, recorded in East Troy, Wis. at the famed Alpine Valley amphitheater and taken from the analog masters of the multi-camera video shoot. Wine and Rhyme The ongoing monthly showcase of original art, live R&B and hip hop, and other surprises continues on this evening with performances by two New Orleans talents — The Grid, the funkadelic/hip hop production project of drummer/bassist/vocalist A.J. Hall, with accompaniment by soulful emcee Nesby Phips; locals Mari So Dope, Haze ALA, and Marcos Coronado are also slated to perform. Art by vintage and surrealist art by Bloodline Tattoos.
