Top Chef Podcast doubleheader: D.C. finale and Just Desserts premiere

As one door closes, another one opens.

We said goodbye to Top Chef: D.C. Wednesday night and welcomed a new incarnation of the Emmy-winning series, Just Desserts (which gave me hope for a good season). But first, I'll discuss D.C.

I have to say that, even a few weeks ago, I wouldn't have called who the three chef'testants to cook in the finale would be. Many of us had Kenny and Angelo pegged to go far from the beginning, but Kenny got kicked off for making some poor choices and Angelo seemed to falter soon after — possibly from the realization that no one was safe from elimination. Tiffany then became our next pick to go all the way but, because of some bad luck and small mistakes, was eliminated right before Singapore.

The final three — Angelo, Ed and Kevin — seemed to be a mixed bag: one guy who has mad talent, a thing for Asian cuisine (and talks to himself); another who has been like a roller coaster ride for most of the season, with about an equal number of wins and instances on the chopping block; and a third who is talented but utilizes too many components in his dishes which, as we've seen before, doesn't fare well with the judges. And, to be honest, I wasn't really crazy about any of them (let alone this season's cast).

I won't give away any spoilers — though all of America should know who won by now — but I do think that the title of Top Chef was given to the right person, judging solely on their performance during the final episode.

Needless to say, I'm happy to have made it all the way through the lackluster season and for the fact that it's finally over.

Top Chef: Just Desserts, on the other hand, looks to be a whole mess of fun — along with spunk, sass and fabulousness — with a cast of characters (literally) and talent. The first episode certainly refreshed my passion for the series. Not to mention, the hottie (men) and bitchiness quotients for this season are higher than any past season of Top Chef. But I'm going to make you listen to the podcast to find out all of our thoughts on Just Desserts.
