La Vida de Frida

Theater Tuesday, July 24

The latest American Stage production, Casa Blue, The Last Moments in the Life of Frida Kahlo, comes as the result of a collaboration between artistic director Todd Olson and fellow drama devotees, actress Karen Garcia and actor/playwright Jeremy Childs. The trio brings the spirit of celebrated Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to the stage in a play that focuses on four different phases of her life, beginning with the near-fatal streetcar accident that left her permanently handicapped at age 18. The four-woman show — marked by projections of Kahlo's works, puppets and clips of her favorite movies — demonstrates how Kahlo turned her misfortune into the inspiration for her creativity and forever changed the face of Mexican art. American Stage closes its 28th season with the premiere of Casa Blue, which opens officially this Friday night. Casa Blue, through Aug. 12, 7:30 p.m. Tues.-Thurs., 8 p.m. Fri., 3 and 8 p.m. Sat., 3 p.m. Sun., 211 Third St. S., St. Petersburg, $26-$32 general/$8.50 children ($10 student rush tickets available 30 minutes prior to curtain), 727-823-7529, americanstage.org.
