, author of Eating Animals, charges agribusinesses with being guilty of "the worst kind of manipulation" for deceiving consumers into paying more because of misleading labels and producing increasingly lower quality food.
Below is a clip from one of Foer's talks where he talks about the "bald lies" that big name food companies tell about their concern for the environment and animal welfare, and how they manipulate us into buying cheap, unhealthy food.
"We are producing cheaper and cheaper food that is worse and worse for human health while disposing of alternatives. We are encouraging, actively, families to eat in cars and not at tables; we're trying to dispense with silverware and it's just terrible..."
Foer goes on to talk about the misleading labeling of "free-range" eggs and how it is just a ploy for consumers to spend more money on a falsely labeled product. He states, "Free-range is not even defined. It has no legal definition whatsoever." (According to the USDA, to label something 'free-range': "Producers must demonstrate to the Agency that the poultry has been allowed access to the outside." That's it.)
