"So how do we say this?!" reads a Tuesday Facebook update from the 3-year-old Hole Donuts.
"The Hole Donuts will be closing its 'doors' permanently this Sunday July 23rd. We have had a great ride and enjoyed every minute of the last 3 years (ok, maybe not all of the 3AM moments). Our city (i.e. its people) have been over the top the best!!"
Jacque Simmons and Ernest Fretwell started The Hole Donuts — whose fresh, small-batch offerings have become a popular fixture at many local markets and businesses on both sides of the bay — to fill a need for gourmet doughnuts in the greater St. Petersburg area, eventually recruiting their good friend Suzanne Stringfield to join the mobile operation. This food editor's favorite is the key lime pie doughnut, but everyone has their go-to.
And how could they not? Featuring a mix of one-of-a-kind combos and familiar favorites, The Hole Donuts menu lists 52 filled, 38 topped, 10 holiday, 12 chocolate and 13 seasonal doughnuts — vegan varieties among them.
Those looking to score the goods one, or a few, more times before Sunday can stop by the following Pinellas locations throughout the week: The Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club or Uncle Andy's Ice Cream Parlor at The Don CeSar daily; TeBella Tea Company at Station House on Wednesday; Old Southeast Market on Friday and Saturday; Intermezzo Coffee & Cocktails on Saturday; and Rae Rae's Cafe or Locale Market on Saturday and Sunday.
In their Facebook announcement about the closure, the owners thanked a number of folks, including their fans, employees and other supporters around town.
"Thanks again St Pete and Tampa for all the great memories and donut love!!! Jacque, Suzanne & Ernest."
