It's a packed Tue., Nov. 17, with several concerts worth mentioning in addition to the most obvious one (Brian Wilson). Breakdown below.
Jake Shimabukuro Hawaii’s most prodigious star of four string melodies has been flexing his uke muscles in realms outside traditional island territories and covering songs touching on blues, jazz, funk, rock n’ roll and folk music as a solo artist for more than a dozen years. Shimabukuro hits town fresh from playing Yasui's Ukulele Concerto with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and on the heels of releasing a voyage-themed album, Travels, which finds him joined by players on drums, bass and keys in originals and a few 70s pop covers – War’s “Low Rider” and the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There.” (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)
CHEW with Snacking, SAHE, Big Brother Atlanta trio CHEW tramples through spacey-grinding psych, groove, prog and experimental rock realms in a few fresh instrumental singles – “Melt” is all oozing electronics, fuzzed-out guitars, ominous basslines and pounding and roiling rhythms, its b-side "Transparent Awareness" lurching and surging to a dark peak before easing to a close. (The Venture Compound, St. Petersburg)
Career with Empire Cinema, Blast & The Detergents A fine Tuesday night bill featuring high-octane local indie bands. Despite an impossible-to-Google name, Career – a quartet born from the late Ink and Sweat – gets credit for plying tight and heavy punk-crusted alt rock, and includes proven pedigree in guitarist Sulynn Hago (who was just welcomed to the ranks of venerated punk outfit Propagandhi), bassist Matt Ostraco, guitarist/vocalist Ryan Fouche and drummer Leo Suarez. They debuted material on Grand National Championships in January and have been working on more that’ll likely get worked into their set. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Brian Wilson featuring Al Jardine The idiosyncratic genius who so epically led the Beach Boys enjoyed an inspiring comeback more than a decade ago and has delivered five albums since. The latest, No Pier Pressure, spurs his latest Bay area concert. Julie had the chance to chat with Wilson last week; read her story here. (Mahaffey Theater, Clearwater)
