Tonight in live music: Dr. Dog at State Theatre

The Pennsylvania indie rock sextet brings their exuberant charm to town this Mon., Sept. 28.

I feel like I’ve watched the kids of Dr. Dog grow up, from my introduction to the Pennsylvania sextet’s spirited ‘60s-hued psych rock and poignant lyrical sensibilities via 2005’s Easy Beat, to seeing them play for the first time in Tampa Bay behind 2007’s We All Belong, to their last two performances here in 2013, owning the main stage at Gasparilla Music Festival then pumping the crowd before the Lumineers at the USF Sun Dome later that fall. Through evolving to a more tight and polished musical force and dropping several more albums (2013’s B-Room was number eight and they released a concert LP, Live at a Flamingo Hotel, in January), Dr. Dog has never lost the charm or exuberance that drew me to their sounds in the first place. This should be a pretty fun show to kick off the week. Florida natives SWIMM get the evening started. 8 p.m., State Theatre, St. Petersburg, $25.
