THURSDAY, JUNE 17
Perpetual Groove [pictured right, photo by Adam Gulledge] There are certain things you can always expect from a show by the Athens, Ga. electro funkadelic jam rock foursome: big instrumental tension-and-release build-ups and blow-outs; much tight interplay between lead singer/guitarist Brock Butler, keyboardist/vocalist John Hruby, bassist Adam Perry and drummer Albert Suttle, Brocks clean sublime guitar melodies on both electric and slide guitar paired with wistful high vocals; one or two P-Groove style covers of songs ranging from Paul Simons Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes to Naïve Melody by the Talking Heads; and saturated lights showering the band and dancing crowd of blissed-out fans in bold washes of techno-color. 8 p.m., Crowbar, Ybor City, $15.
Painting at the Palladium with the Kym Purling Trio In this concert hosted in association with the Morean Arts Center, acclaimed jazz pianist Purling and his ensemble interpret selections from the Beatles catalog while four artists paint portraits of John, Paul, George and Ringo. 7:30 p.m., Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg, $15.
FRIDAY, JUNE 18
Good Old War [pictured left] w/Yukon Blonde/Audra Mae/Ettison Philadelphia indie pop trio Good Old Wars charming, country roots-tinged sound is marked by gorgeous three-part harmonies, elegant melodic interplay between acoustic guitar, keys and drums, bright sprays of accordion, and the sort of songwriting that just makes you feel good inside. Good Old War is celebrating the release of their self-titled second album, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Heatseeker charts. 7 p.m. oors, Orpheum, Ybor City, $7 in advance/$9 dos (all ages).
Peter Baldwin w/Mirror Pal/The Aloha Model The alt-soul singer-songwriter brings his band back to Ybor City and is supported by fellow Orlando act, Mirror Pal, an ambient alt-rock foursome with pretty, meandering melodies and vocal harmonies. Tampas Aloha Model rounds out the bill with stripped-down electronics. 9 p.m. doors, New World Brewery, St. Petersburg, $6.
