Keith Jarrett

Standards, Vol. 1

KEITH JARRETT

(ECM)

This is the disc that kicked off a long and fruitful collaboration between pianist Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock. It's still my favorite of the many CDs the trio has released. At the point of this recording, Jarrett was best known for a series of meandering solo albums. Standards, Vol. 1 established again that he could swing and work telepathically with other musicians. While the music is expansive and free-flowing, the trio plays the melodies of tunes like "All the Things You Are" and "God Bless the Child" with reverence and care. The music manages to be both pretty and profound.
