Here's a breakdown of what's happening in concerts on this fine Mon., April 25.
Santigold Maybe you’ve mistaken her for M.I.A. in the past; both have self-assured swagger, a similarly brassy-honking exotic quality to their vocals, and share hip-hop/worldbeat tendencies and producers in Diplo and Switch. But Santigold’s sound is heavier on the alt pop-sparkle, buoyant synth-dance beats and overall vibrant, playful spirit. Her just-released third album, 99¢, also reveals her penchant for marrying feel-good energy with impish observations and lush electro-driven instrumentals ala skating rink-ready bubble gum-breezy self-actualizing first single “Can't Get Enough of Myself.” She also gets furtive and slinky ala dark-shaded ode “Walking in a Circle,” channels tribal percussive urgency in “Before the Fire” and shows her New Wave influences in “Who I Thought You Were.” You’ll likely hear lots of fresh material on this date, but also select cuts off fine 2012 breakthrough, Master of My Make-Believe, and maybe that song she produced for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack, “Shooting Arrows at the Sky.” (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City)—Leilani Polk
Magrudergrind with Yautja, God Harvest, Escapist, Funhater Monday is for celebrating the release of a tape from local outfit Funhater, but the main draw on this night is D.C. grindcore legends Magrudergrind, which coalesced in the early 2000s, released a handful of LPs, EPs, and split 7-inches before pretty much disappearing at the beginning of the decade. They returned in February with the release of II, a 15-song, 23-minute slash, burn, scream, and thrash session that is an exercise in cramming all the fury and anger of a 15-year-old kid within the booksmarts of a grown man that’s only grown more pissed off since taking a stab at that Master’s in Political Science. Hocico with Cyanide Regime Mexican electro-industrial duo Hocico is Erik Garcia and Oscar Mayorga (anagrammed pseudonyms Erk Aicrag and Racso Agroyam); the former chants, croaks and shrieks bilingual lyrics in a gnarly snarl while the latter programs dark and stealthy techno beats, splicing in the occasional creepy audio clips.
