Culture Club breaks in the new Madeira Beach Municipal Complex at UnityFest this Saturday

The one-day '80s-centric event also features sets by Howard Jones and Soft Cell's Marc Almond, among others

No act could be deemed more appropriate to headline a festival promoting racial, religious and sexual tolerance than peacock pop star Boy George and his newly reunited Culture Club. BG and his original Kissing to Be Clever bandmates — guitarist/keysman Roy Hay, bassist Mikey Craig and drummer/percussionist Jon Moss — hit the Unity Festival in Madeira Beach this Saturday along with a whole lot of other diverse, ‘80s elite performers.

Among them are Howard Jones (“No One Is to Blame,” “And Do You Feel Scared?”), Soft Cell leader Marc Almond (of “Tainted Love” fame), C+C Music Factory (“Gonna Make You Sweat,” “Keep It Comin' (Dance Till You Can't Dance No More)”), and Book of Love (“Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls”). My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult proves the only head scratcher; whereas the majority are New Wave-pop oriented, Thrill Kill brings heavy industrial propulsion. But, hey, they came up in 1987, so technically, they fit…

Unity Festival marks the official unveiling of Madeira Beach’s freshly renovated waterfront recreation complex, which can accommodate 8,000 people and boasts an outdoor stage overlooking the Bay. For more info about the fest, visit unityfest.us.
