Known for her affable moxie and her comedy act with husband Jerry Stiller (and famous son, Ben), Anne Meara died Saturday, according to a statement released to the Associated Press by her husband and son. Cause of death has not been disclosed.
The press statement said of comedy sweethearts Stiller and Meara: "They were married for 61 years and worked together almost as long.”
The couple appeared together on The Ed Sullivan Show and other programs in the 1960s and '70s. Meara was ever-present on TV during the 1970s, on prime time and sitcoms like All in the Family, celebrity game shows like The Match Game and variety shows like The Carol Burnett Show. With impressive range, she could go from loving matriarch to sassy Irish bar maid. Meara was always at home in whatever role she played.
More recently, she's appeared on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and lent her voice to the Disney animated film Planes: Fire and Rescue. She also had recurring roles on All My Children and The King of Queens (with husband, Stiller).
Meara is also survived by daughter Amy, and several grandchildren.
