Regionites can now purchase European sweets from St. Petersburg's Retro Oven Bakery directly.

The family-run Bay area bakery, which focuses on traditional European recipes, has been using part of its commercial kitchen at 2803 38th Ave. N. as a storefront since early September. Here, owner Ivana Ivanovic's gourmet cakes, pastries and other desserts are available for walk-in customers and special orders.

Though European cakes are specialties at Retro Oven — which has functioned as a wholesale baker for local coffee shops for two years — the five-seat bake shop also features classic American cakes light in sugar and butter.

The bakery's wide, ever-changing selection includes cakes starting at $50 and $5.50 cake slices (think hummingbird and boem cakes), plus sweet and savory pastries like spinach-cheese pies, almond chocolate croissants and bread stuffed with Canadian bacon, cheese and egg. The breads are baked with five types of flour and six types of seeds.

Retro Oven is open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
