On Friday, restaurants in St. Petersburg's Grand Central District began their monthlong participation in the Battle of the Burg(er), an annual contest that determines which eatery offers the best rendition of the beef 'n' bun comfort food.

Diners will be able to chow on meat and veggie patties from The Burg Bar & Grill, Butler’s Old Key West Bar & Grill, Community Cafe, Craftsman House Gallery & Cafe, Georgie’s Alibi, Jimbo’s Joint, Leafy Greens Cafe, The Queens Head or Urban Brew and BBQ throughout August.

After sampling their fill of participating restaurants' showdown entries, eaters will cast their vote for the People's Choice online. The voting window is Aug. 1 to 31.

The Judges' Choice, picked by a panel of guest judges, will accompany the award granted by diners.

With winners announced Tuesday, Sept. 2, an award ceremony will take place on a date that's to be determined.
