Mitch Perry Report 3.8.12: Intl. Women's Day version

There are just two days left in the Florida Legislature's regular 2012 session, which means there's all kinds of mayhem going on which we won't know about until possibly the Sunday papers, if last year's finale is repeated.

One issue that hadn't received a lot of attention in this year's budget is the $438 million in federal funds that Florida has been granted to deal with Medicaid patients. Of course, because it has to do with President Obama's signature health care reform law, Governor Rick Scott and the Florida House say they don't want it.

It's looking like there will be more than $1 billion of new K-12 education funding included in the budget, a goal that Scott called for before the session began. Isn't it sort of weird for him to congratulate himself for doing so, when he was responsible for more than $1 billion being cut from education the year before?

Progressive icon Dennis Kucinich's 35-year political career may be over after his big loss in a Democratic primary Tuesday night. In looking back at the Cleveland politico's career, I can't help but remember when he appeared at a WMNF concert at Skipper's in 2007 during a Led Zeppelin tribute.

And today is International Women's Day. Observe it as you will. One programming note: I won't be hosting WMNF's Last Call program at 5 p.m., but tune in if you can — hope it's compelling. Yours truly will be back there next week at that time.
