SATURDAY, JUNE 28
Bananas 37th Anniversary Party with Archaic Interest, Sweet Bronco, The Vultures Take a minute to ponder the implications of an indie record store being open for nearly four decades. Since 1977. Before some of us were even twinkles in our parents’ eyes. Bananas has accomplished this feat amid a wasteland of dying indie record stores by diversifying its offerings over the years while never straying too far from its bread and butter – vinyl – and continually expanding its stock. Bananas has been counted among Rolling Stone’s Best Records Stores in the U.S., and it currently boasts nearly 3 million units that pack both a retail store (where the live music and anniversary party festivities take place from 4 to 11 p.m.) and a 10,000-square-foot warehouse. Single-day sales for the occasion include 50 percent off used vinyl valued at $4.99 and less, 10 percent off all other vinyl, CDs and DVDs. 4-10 p.m., Bananas Records, St. Petersburg.
Jonathon “Boogie” Long with The Tampa Collective Long is a 25-year-old guitar-slinging bluesman from Baton Rouge, La., who’s been playing since age 6 and fronts a three-piece soul-infused band, The Blues Revolution, in addition to playing sideman for NOLA-bred blues singer Luther Kent. 8 p.m., Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa.
Displace with S.P.O.R.E., K Slat An evening of rockin’ and groovin’ from three Florida-brewed acts: Tampa foursome Displace, purveyors of “space-funk dance-disco jams,” funk/deep house/disco DJ K-Slat, and Jacksonville’s “Live Instrumentated Electrofunk Jam Band,” S.P.O.R.E. 9 p.m., New World Brewery, Ybor City.
Seven Handle Circus A sextet that came together in 2010, Seven Handle Circus hails from Atlanta and crafts rollicking, richly textured folk-grass tunes on guitar, banjo, fiddle, upright bass and drums. Debut EP Whiskey Stills & Sleeping Pills was self-released in 2012. 8 p.m., Dunedin Brewery, Dunedin.

Phantogram with Bad Things My iTunes claims I’ve listened to Phantogram’s “Black Out Days” 42 times. In the grand scheme of plays, this may not seem like many, but even taking into account my knee-jerk mode of cycling out old albums to make room for new ones, it’s a lot — the highest number in my library right now — and all the other upbeat tracks on Voices have similarly high play numbers. I jam the synth rock duo’s latest album while working out. I jam it while pumping up for going out. In fact, writing this now and listening to the album, I want to get up and get down. I dig its fuzzy hip hop production qualities, its sinister moodiness and electro breakdowns; the vocals of Sarah Bartel are alluring breathy coos or more yearning wails, and even the slower and dreamier pop odes that seemed out of place at first listen have grown beloved. Plus, I have an entirely different yet equally strong affection for their 2009 debut, Eyelid Movies. Getting to see the New York duo play live as I dance and groove along underneath The Ritz’s LCD screen-lit ceiling is stoking my growing anticipation about the show. 6 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show, The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City.
Nato Coles w/The Tim Version/Tiny Tortures Minnesota punk-country rocker Nato Coles mixes Midwestern power pop flavor with twangy heartland drive, and is usually joined by his full Blue Diamond Band. This Sunday evening bill also features sets by local punk staples (est. 1999) and Best of the Bay winners The Tim Version along with Wesley Chapel-brewed punk pop trio Tiny Tortures. 9 p.m., New World Brewery, Ybor City.
Ras Kass with Other Elements, Hagan Lee, FXWL MXWF, Real Life, Eyeznpowa, Lord Kass, Prince Golden His Facebook genre description reads, “Anti ‘Man-Dress’ Hip Hop/Real Shit/Lyrics/Adult ContempHop,” and that seems about right coming from a Cali rapper hailed by Pitchfork.com as one of the best of all time. Ras Kass spits over big grooves or trip hopping, sample-scattered rhythms and media-clipped interludes like those from Menace II Society in “Sushi,” not the rolls but according to him, “the definition of raw spitter.” Kass is likely known in wider circles for his membership in hip hop supergroup The HRSMN – which also includes Killah Priest, Canibus and Kurupt – or perhaps his tenure as part of Golden State Warriors with Xzibit and Saafir. His 2013 Barmageddon LP features guest spots by, among others, Kendrick Lamar, Talib Kweli and Ice-T. Ol’ Dirty Sundays will carry on as planned after the live hip hop show. 8 p.m., Crowbar, Ybor City.
