Welcome back everybody. For some of you, this is your return back to the working life after taking a couple of weeks off for the Christmas holidays. Yours truly spent the holidays here in Tampa Bay for the first time since moving here in 2000. Not bad overall, though it was difficult to feel too much like the holidays as we endured 80 degree temperatures up until Christmas Eve.
So what's going on? Well, if you care, you can read the New York Times piece this morning on the latest with Tampa "socialite" Jill Kelley. Or what about Liz Cheney dropping out of the Senate race in Wyoming?
Cheney is saying there has been a "family situation" affecting her candidacy, but let's be honest. She was going nowhere in her race against GOP incumbent Mike Enzi. And charges of carpetbagging didn't help (A charge that will be used constantly in the CD13 general election beginning next week).
But the biggest local story this weekend was the Tampa Bay Times piece on the late Bill Young's personal life. The piece quotes extensively from members of the "first family" of Young, and how he abandoned them and his first wife to marry a woman younger than his children (Beverly) and raised a second family with virtually no contact with them.
I'm curious what the reaction is out there amongst all of those who revere Young so much. Sympathy? Scorn? What about Beverly Young?
Meanwhile the Republicans trying to succeed Young in Congress held another debate this morning on St. Pete Beach. There's just a little over a week to go in that race, and David Jolly continues to lead in the polls.
88,000 Floridians lost their unemployment benefits over the weekend. There will be a vote in the Senate today to try to extend those benefits, but there doesn't seem to be many Republicans interested in the deal proposed by Harry Reid.
And what do you think about Brian Schweitzer? The former Montana governor is thinking about running for the Democratic nomination for president. But against Hillary Clinton he has no shot, right?
