Tim Reynolds & TR3

A rather fatty Friday in live music. Check out what's hitting tonight below.

Tim Reynolds & TR3 Reynolds has been a member of Dave Matthews Band for six years, officially, and unofficially, since DMB formed in ’91. He’s been leading his own projects for upwards of three decades. In fact, it was during his ‘80s-era tenure with TR3 that he met Matthews. Though inactive for several years, he revived his electric fusion power trio (with bassist Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier) in ‘07 and has been pumping out tour dates and the odd album with TR3 ever since. Their most recent release, Like Some Kind of Alien Invasion, dropped October 7 via ATO and features an experimental yet still accessible fusion of prog, funk, jazz and blues; first single “All Over the Place” calls on all of these genres at once, with gritty soulful vocals delivering free associative-style verses about “walking in the sand, drinking coffee” over a staccato-bumping tempo that lurches and grooves amid guitar riffs and scratches. Solid stuff. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)

The Nearly Deads, The Animal In Me, It Lives It Breathes Three unsigned acts with grungy alt rock sounds unite for the “Full of Rage with Nicholas Cage” tour as led by Nashville-based alt rock quintet The Nearly Deads, the name a cheeky reference to their Florida roots (“Home of the newly-weds and the nearly-deads”); platinum-haired vocalist Theresa Jeane actually met lead guitarist Steve Tobi while both were playing the Tampa Bay area scene. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

DrFameus with Dynohunter, K Slat DrFameus is the solo project and performance pseudonym of Disco Biscuits drummer Allen Aucoin, who takes his chops to a new level of impressive production that touches on breakbeats, drum n’ bass, dubstep and house territories as he beat-keeps on a kit and pads while firing off dark, thick, rubber-band elastic grooves and executing various other one-man production tricks. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

The Florida Orchestra Rock Series: The Music of the Rolling Stones “Under My Thumb,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction,” “Wild Horses,” “Honky Tonk Women” and various other cuts from the Stones catalog gets the symphonic treatment in this latest TFO rock concert presentation. Featured guest Brody Dolyniuk – whose claim to fame is lending his pipes to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock – brings his best Mick Jagger vocal swagger to the evening. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)

Jason Aldean with Florida Georgia Line, Tyler Farr He’s obviously able to fill up arenas, and his six albums have spawned 13 No. 1 singles on the Hot Country and Country Airplay charts … one of those being 2009’s “Big Green Tractor.” Really people? Kelly Clarkson gets the credit for 2010 hit duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay.” But “Burnin’ It Down” off just-released Old Boots, New Dirt has a drum loop. It’s not pretty. I’ve never been a huge fan of country pop but this a new trend I just can’t get behind. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)

Jackyl with Luvdogz, Den Of Thieves, Bullets First Driven by the raspy piercing howls of frontman Jesse James Dupree, Jackyl has been frying up and serving hard grinding Southern rock n’ roll and metal with anthemic rah-rah choruses like “I Stand Alone” and “Push Comes to Shove” since the early ‘90s. Dupree is also an entrepreneur (he has a line of spirits) and the producer and star of Full Throttle Saloon, a reality TV series now in its sixth season that documents the day-to-day happenings in South Dakota’s biggest biker bar. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)

Willy Porter Hailing from Wisconsin and bringing finger-style guitar prowess to his singer-songwriter resume is Willy Porter, who pits his pleasant baritone against a picked and plucked blend of rock, jazz, roots and blues; his last album was 2012’s Cheeseburgers and Gasoline. (Hideaway Café & Recording Studio, Tampa)
