Over the past week, the scandal involving Christian Right leader George Rekers, has reached a deafening level.
Rekers has been at the forefront of "reparative therapy" to "cure" homosexuals, and was employed by Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum in a 2008 trial to testify on behalf of Florida's ban on gay adoption, a law so strong constitutionally that no other state in the country has such a ban.
Recently the Miami New Times busted Rekers with a 20 year old man identified as his "escort" as he returned from a European vacation, who he found off of the website rentboy.com.
Since that time, initially gay rights groups, followed by newspaper editorials, have denounced McCollum for spending $120,000 to pay for Rekers "expert" testimony. McCollum has responded only by saying that Rekers was credentialed as an expert witness, but that knowing what he does now, he wouldn't do it again.
Knowing they have some juice to go attack the AG, Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman is doing so today.
She's just sent a letter to McCollum, the leading Republican in the governor's race this year, blasting him for his "fiscal recklessness."
