On the Radar: Irish playwright Conor McPherson's dark comedy The Seafarer at American Stage

Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview upcoming arts events to mark your calendars for. After award-winning runs in London and Broadway, acclaimed Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s The Seafarer finally arrived at American Stage for its Tampa Bay premiere this week.

Inspired by an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon poem of the same name — one that dwells heavily on suffering, life’s transience and the fear of God — McPherson’s dark comedy is set in a dingy house in the Northern suburbs of Dublin, one that James “Sharky” Harkin shares with his older, blind brother. Christmas Eve finds the pair hosting a night of heavy drinking and poker-playing with two old friends and one stranger who turns out to be — dum dum DUM! — the Devil himself.
