Do It Tonight: The Cult at Jannus and Denise Moore at the Independent

The Cult holds special memories for us aging Gen Xers. In the '80s, we would flock to the dance floor when She Sells Sanctuary and Fire Woman were played at now-defunct alternative teen establishments as Skyfeathers, Faces and Off Limits. (Excuse me while I adjust my dentures.)

According to Mistress Music Editor Leilani Polk, England’s iconic gothic rock band has gotten hip to the whole Internet thing and is using it to get their “textured metaphysical rock music for the contemporary music head” out faster, and in as many different formats as they can offer (CD/DVD dualdisc, vinyl, USB flash drives, digital download). The Cult’s Capsule 1 dropped September, and the band is already prepping the next installment, Capsule 2: New Blood Deep Cuts (out Nov. 16), which includes new songs, live recordings of band hits, and never-before-seen video footage. On each date of their current “L’America Tour,” the band offers a USB drive that includes a live recording of tonight's show at Jannus Live in downtown St. Petersburg.

The Friends of the Library in the Hizzeights, ahem, Seminole Heights, hosts a fundraiser at the Independent, which makes for the second Monday in a row that the spunky little bar is making our webby feature.

Come help raise money for the brand-spanking-new library branch to be constructed at its current site on Central and Osborne avenues in Tampa. Jazz vocalist Denise Moore and keyboardist Kym Purling perform. Happy hour drink prices help ease the pain of the high cost of living. The Independent is at 5106 N. Florida Ave., Tampa. $20, $15 for members. For information, call 813-500-5473.
