M. Ward to play State Theatre in May

Tickets on sale this Friday; playlist included.

St. Petersburg is really coming up, as far as being a tour stop destination. This year alone, we've seen Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and The Black Angels with Roky Erickson (that one's actually tomorrow night). Coming up on the St. Pete slate — Local Natives, Deltron 3030, The Sounds, of Montreal, Morrissey, and Schoolboy Q and 2 Chainz within two days of each other.

Now, another fantastic musician has added St. Petersburg to his tour calendar: M. Ward.

State Theatre confirmed today on their Facebook page, that the indie folk singer-songwriter from Portland is stopping at the venue on Thurs., May 1, 2014. Tickets go on sale this Friday. Embedded post below.

This news is particularly exciting because I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE M. Ward (real name Matthew Stephen Ward). His vocals are like crushed velvet, warm and soothing and sexy and luscious all at once, and his songwriting is poignant, lovely; charming roots music that catches your heart and gently squeezes. It doesn't hurt that he's collaborated with one of my favorite people — Ms. Zooey Deschanel (the music-savvy actress and his other half in She & Him) — and he's also appeared on recordings with Cat Power, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Norah Jones (he's a good vocal match with the ladies) and My Morning Jacket, among others. Not to mention, you know, Monsters of Folk with Jim James, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis.

In honor of M. Ward's imminent appearance in da 'burg, I've put together a playlist of favored odes, because why not? Check it out below...
