Steve Earle & the Dukes last album JT was not something the Grammy award-winning musician wanted to record, he told the New York Times. On it, the band covers 10 of his son Justin Townes Earle’s songs as a tribute after Justin overdosed in August last year. Steve Earle wrote the 11th song on the release, “Last Words” and, holy fuck, its heartbreaking.
The Americana-country-folk-rock band’s 2020 album Ghost of West Virginia is another doozy about the “Upper Big Branch coal mine explosion that killed 29 men in that state in 2010.”
It’s going to be an emotional night all-around, I’d bring tissues. Masks are recommended for everyone, required if you’re not vaccinated. Tickets are sold in pairs, so bring someone you can cry on.
Steve Earle & the Dukes. Sunday, Aug. 22, 8 p.m. $34.50-$79.50. Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater. rutheckerdhall.com
