There are at least a thousand reasons to go vegan, but making cool designs on your latte isn’t one of them.

Plant-based milks just don’t froth the way cow discharge does, but that’s not stopping WeVegan Cafe—which has been holding it down South of Gandy since it opened this summer—from hosting a latte art competition on Friday night.

“Alternative milks are typically pretty tricky to texture and pour with,” Luis Espel, a beloved figure in the local coffee world told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, adding that oat milk seems to perform best. “Some [oat milks] almost steam as well as whole milk.”

It’s a good thing Oatly is the presenting sponsor for this latte art throwdown that’ll also have plenty of plant-based food and adult beverages on tap. First ‘spro pours out at 6:30 p.m.
