Tampa Theater's 'Black Love' film series kicks off next weekend

During weekends in February, Tampa's majestic and historic moviehouse, Tampa Theatre, will screen four classic films focusing on African American relationships. Each one has a different community partner and guest speakers like City of Tampa-sponsored "Love & Basketball" with a talk from Director of Parks and Recreation Sherisha Hills and Mayor Jane Castor.

If you can only choose one, it has to be Diana Ross 1975 Mahogany—aka the most fashionable movie of all time—showing at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. Ross and Billy Dee Williams’ on-screen romance is forever heart wrenching (as also seen in Lady Sings the Blues.)

Part of the proceeds benefit Tampa Organization of Black Affairs. History with a Twist owner Sophia Cherry leads a talk “about the history of black cinema, with an emphasis on romance films.”

Waves 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27
Gamma Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Men of Tomorrow program, BUBBA INC (Brothers United Building Brothers Alliance), Men of Vision, and the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival are all partners for this one. A/V pro Clem Harrod joins members of the organizations for a talk after.
