Alt-weeklies have always been a place for new writers to find their voice and experiment in newsrooms that buck tradition and challenge the status quo. And at a time when other shops are shrinking, Euclid Media Group (EMG), parent company of Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, is looking to grow.
EMG is now accepting applications for a full-time "New Voices Fellow" who'll work on long-form journalism that could land in some of the eight communities where the company operates, including Tampa Bay.
It's a 12-month commitment with a stipend of $35,000-$40,000, and EMG anticipates hiring two fellows in this inaugural year.
What will fellows do?
Write—and write some more. EMG editors will work with fellows to develop story ideas that dig into life in the city where they'll live and work. Successful fellows will write several cover stories throughout their fellowship, and can also earn bylines in other areas of coverage (including food or arts) depending on their interests.
By working closely with an editor, fellows will learn how to develop story ideas outside the daily news cycle and learn to manage long-form projects. They'll also get mentoring and feedback that will help you develop as a writer.
Who is EMG looking for?
Candidates with a passion for storytelling, no matter their background. We’re especially interested in amplifying the voices of people of color and candidates from non-traditional backgrounds, whether they're a first-generation college student, a newcomer to journalism or a reporter at a small paper looking for new opportunities.
Applications close on Sept. 15, with offers going out not long after that.
Interested parties should follow the prompts in the full job description for EMG's new fellowship and send your résumé and cover letter to EMG Executive Editor Sarah Fenske.
We looking forward to hearing from you.
