Tampa Theatre secures $14 million for repairs and restorations

The historic Tampa Theatre is getting a well deserved face lift.

The Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) voted unanimously Wednesday in favor of a $14 million funding request to start phase II of the proposed restoration plan for the Tampa Theatre.

Guests can expect to see a second screen room, support spaces, increased production space, enhanced technology and additional patron amenities according to a press release.

“Our Goal is to present a fully restored Tampa Theatre to the community in time for the Theatre’s 100th anniversary in October of 2026,” said President & CEO of Tampa Theatre John Bell.

Phase I of the theater’s restoration efforts started back in 2017 to address infrastructure needs to the interior and exterior.

“The CRA support will ensure that the Tampa Theatre continues to be a landmark in Downtown Tampa and allows everyone to enjoy its unique cultural experience,” said CRA Chairwoman and District 3 councilwoman Lynn Hurtak.

Built in 1926, the Tampa Theatre is located at 711 N Franklin Street, and is a historic landmark. The theater now averages 160,000 visitors yearly and provides over 246 jobs producing over $800,000 in revenue, according to a press release.
