“Don’t fuckin’ make me cry,”
Laura Jane Grace plays The Bricks in Ybor City, Florida on Dec. 11, 2021.
were Laura Jane Grace
’s first words to an applauding Ybor City audience gathered to see her first Tampa show since 2017
. “I’m serious.”
But then the Against Me! frontwoman launched into “Joy,” the lead off track from the band’s 2005 album Searching for a Former Clarity
and proceeded to turn in a 23-song compendium of her best songs, new stuff (hello “Dysphoria Hoodie”) and even live set rarities like “Shit Stroll.”
Grace, who drove down from St. Louis, did it again on Saturday where the legion of fans included WWE superstar Sami Zayn, who was one of just roughly 300 people who got into the two sold-out shows at The Bricks.
Highlights from Grace’s stage banter include a story about visiting Gainesville on the way down (“I hung out with my ex-wife… she gave me the haircut—you can decide if she still loves me or not.”) and a story about Tampa punk legend Glenn Papp who used to book a fledgling Against Me! when it was a band that would “drive up from Naples and fill a last minute spot with just a phone call.”
