South Tampa's historic 'Snow House' is now for sale on Bayshore Boulevard

An iconic South Tampa home with ties to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Buccaneers, and the city's smallest public park is now on the market.

Located at 1001 Bayshore Blvd., the Dutch Colonial home is currently owned by former Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon and his wife Jaye. Maddon, known for his thick-rimmed glasses, was with the Rays from 2006-2014, and purchased the home in 2012 for $1,760,000.

According to Tampa Bay History Center Director Rodney Kite-Powell, property records show the home was first built in 1919 by Henry E. Snow, Sr., and his wife, Bessie. Though the home's listing agent, Susan Vaughn of Coastal Properties Group, says the home was built two years earlier.

"Snow owned a wholesale grocery company, Snow-Bryan Co., with T. Ed Bryan, but he was also a city councilman," said Kite-Powell in an email to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. "One of his committees was the parks committee, which I mention only because the smallest park in the city, and possibly in the whole country, is Snow Park, at the apex of Kennedy Boulevard and Grand Central Avenue.  He also had the unfortunate luck of dying on the same day as David P. Davis, so Davis got the big headline."

The historic house has had quite a few owners since, but one if the more famous occupants was certainly the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first head coach John McKay. McKay led the creamsicle Bucs from 1976-1984, and purchased the home with his wife "Corky" from the team in 1985 for just $350,000.

The 5,403-square-foot estate is now asking $3,900,000.

The completely updated main house features four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, two wood-burning fireplace, a library and a sun room. The property also comes with a detached guesthouse and media room, a three-car garage, a salt pool and an outdoor kitchen.
