A truly one-of-a-kind house in Tampa Bay is still on the market. Simply referred to as "The Ruskin House," the home was designed and built by local architect Mike Calvino, who spent 7 years on the project.
The 3 bedroom, 4 bathroom home sits at the head of the Little Manatee River overlooking Tampa Bay, and is an ominous temple of concrete, glass and wood. In a 2005 feature, the Herald-Tribune called the home "extraordinary" and "one-of-a-kind," explaining that the actual idea for the home's enormous roof made of curving wooden beams was inspired by a shell. “It’s about the motion of sailing in the water,” said Calvino to the paper. “My idea for the structure comes out of wanting to mark the land with a shell that is kind of like a ruin. And that will provide the major structure for it and kind of the foundation piece."
The 2,753-square-foot home features elevated glass walkways, built-in furniture, a rooftop deck, an indoor heated pool, a hot tub, as well as a private beach and boat dock. The home also has a separate residence, called "The Boathouse," which includes a separate bedroom, bath and screened-in porch.
