Shapiro’s hazy, moody oil-on-linen paintings, primarily depicting carnivals and amusement parks in the hours surrounding dusk and dawn, are wonderfully moody and mysterious, giving an edgy, tenuous quality to these colorful roadside attractions.
Tonnessen’s linoleum block prints of vintage Florida scenes, on the other hand, are quirky, but light-hearted and whimsical, with feel-good images of old Florida motels, vintage cars, and drive-in theaters hearkening back to the artist’s memories of her own childhood.
