A quick breakdown of music happening for this Fri., Dec. 26…
Serious Soul 2014 Finale: Ryan Elliott Berlin-by-way-of-Detroit DJ/remixer Ryan Elliott is repped by Ghostly International offshoot Spectral Sound (Audion, James T. Cotton), and has more than a decade of experience behind the decks, not to mention an expansive record collection that he draws from to build his bassline-driven, kick drum-thumping, high hat-hissing techno-house jams. (Hyde Park Café, Tampa)
Hot Rod Hornets The name says it all – this three-piece of guitar, double bass and drums serves up that warm, 1950s-evocative rockabilly healthily dosed in country and blues with setlists made up of songs from the era, including a mash-up of Johnny Cash’s “Blistered” with the Bonanza theme and “Sweet Love on My Mind” by Johnny Burnette. (Ale and the Witch, St. Petersburg)
The 13th Night of Christmas with Infinite Third, OPHELIA, Kersey Williams, Mountain Holler A post-Christmas live music bash featuring four solo acts that are all associated with the newly-launched Remember You Are Dreaming (RYAD) music collective/record label, founded by experimental guitarist Billy Mays III aka Infinite Third. He leads the lineup with his ambient, looped-and-effected post-rock and electro-psychedelic melodies. (Fubar, St. Petersburg)
Kyle Chason & The Swindlin' Hearts and Broken Things Co-CD Release Party Two St. Pete acts that don’t share much in common sonically come together to celebrate the completion of their respective albums. Guitar-slinging singer-songwriter Kyle Chason and The Swindlin’ Hearts (bassist David Wolfkowski and drummer Andrew Mort) present the nine-song Whiskey and Wanderin', its crunchy alt country and twangy folk rambles packed with plenty of boozing and brooding and battling of inner demons. Noise pop quartet Broken Things delivers an EP, Four Songs, its Bob Mould-influenced dual-guitar sounds a balance of melodic passages and grungy reverb-drenched riffage. Warm up for both acts by punk trio Not For Nothing. (The Studio@620, St. Petersburg)
The Rungs Brooklyn husband-and-wife duo Mandy and Diwas Gurung aka The Rungs ply sticky, shimmery electro rock dosed heavily in New Wave influences and lightly in Southeast Asian flavors, her serenely pretty coos multi-tracked and cruising over looped and effected guitars, pulsing synthesizers and drum machine beats that make for rather catchy, danceable results. (Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse, Tampa)
